Starting today we’ll be doing a throwback recipe every Wednesday. This week we’re giving you our recipe for the 1990 classic Dick Tracy starring Warren Beatty. We decided to choose this movie because it had Charles Durning in it, and he received a lifetime achievement award this year by the Screen Actors Guild. You young kids might recognize him as the voice of Francis Griffin on Family Guy.
Film noir… Mix in a little comic-based do-gooder with iconic villains linked to the mob and you’ve got one amazing movie. It’s like slice and bake cookies, there’s not much to them, but who doesn’t enjoy them every once in a while. Who can argue with a two-way radio wristwatch? And the Monopoly game at McDonald’s has never been the same.

Helping others is what it’s about, like when you give a cup of sugar and a couple of eggs to your neighbor that’s making a bunt cake for the family that just moved into the house of the couple you really didn’t care for across the cul de sac. For what amounts to a few cents, you make the days of two families. This recipe makes you feel good inside, even if you get left with the sour taste of not getting to enjoy the spoils of the bunt cake.

1800′s London and the totalitarian future London seem to have very similar flavors don’t they? Unlikely, self-destructing, hero-in-disguise, check. Brutal murders, check. Revenge, check. Sounds like the formula for barrels of blood if you ask me. Throw in a fair bit of singing and well timed color in an otherwise dreary and gray world and you’ve got yourself a lava cake. What looks like cake on the outside can be cut open to reveal a flowing trail of lava … or is it blood?

In Remembrance of Heath Ledger
We were planning on posting Sweeny Todd today, but we decided to pull it and do 10 Things I Hate About You in memoriam of Heath Ledger who died yesterday.
Shakespeare is like the meat part of a meatloaf – it’s always going to taste like meat, but the real flavor comes from all the spices. This is a classic retelling of a girl doesn’t like boy but gets girl in the end and everyone’s happy story. Heath showed his versatility in 10 Things by showing everyone that he could play a seemingly insane high school student who may or may not have had his liver removed while still being a singing and dancing show-boater. Larry Miller’s over-protective parenting is only rivaled by Kathy Bates and Kathleen Turner.

This recipe for Cloverfield gives you a really nice vomit flavor. If you really enjoy having your monster-destroys-a-city movie to be filmed with a hand held camera, then you might like it. The origins and intents of Cloverfield’s creatures are just as mysterious as those Tom Cruise dealt with. The sound was pretty great though. Oh, and J.J. Abrams, you owe me 15 bucks for making my fiancée puke.

Who would have thought an unexpected teen pregnancy would cause such a spicy flavor. While searching for how and where love fits into relationships the title character teaches everyone a little about themselves and makes them question their own take on blurry line between friendship and love. Honestly, who doesn’t have a little crush on the saucy Juno by the end?

They say opposites attract, and I don’t know who decided to mix pretzels and chocolate, but God bless them. The intertwining of the of the three wings of salty goodness covered with always reliable milk chocolate create a tangled web of delectable flavor that works itself out in the end. You really do find love where you least expect it and with who you least expect.

Movie Recipes is a place where you can find out what movies went into the making of other movies. It’s a pretty simple idea, but can tell you a lot about the movie and help you find other movies you might like.
We take a film and break that up into the various “ingredients” (other movies) it takes to create that movie.
Movie Recipes is run by myself (Garrison) and my friend Jason who love movies. Between the two of us we’ve seen over 1200 different movies, so we’ve got a lot of ingredients to use.
We hope you’ll stick around and maybe discover your new favorite movie!
